Learning Blog 2: Sinulog Dance Practice

Because of the dancer-friendly steps of one step forward and two steps backward, and its impersonation of the waves of the sea, I enjoy performing the Sinulog dance. A religious and cultural celebration called Sinulog festivities is held every year in Cebu City on the third Sunday in January. The event honors the Santo Niño, a statue of the infant Jesus Christ, and is lively and colorful. Participants in the festival dance while wearing vibrantly colored costumes to the beat of drums and local gongs, fusing Spanish and indigenous Philippine customs.

The festival normally lasts nine days, during which time there are several events and activities happening all throughout the city. The grand parade, which takes place on the festival’s final day and contains extravagant floats, traditional dances, and music, is one of its highlights. People from all over the world have flocked to Cebu City to take part in the festivities.

The Sinulog Festival is not only a celebration of religion but also of Cebuano culture and tradition. Locals gather during this time to exhibit their skills and ingenuity in a variety of artistic mediums. As a whole, the Sinulog Festival is a vibrant and happy event that unites people in a spirit of solidarity and fraternity.
